Happy New Year! 2015 has been by far the most exciting and successful year of our existence, and I am so excited for what looks to be our most promising year yet! The Stan Dup Ensemble will stage three exciting original productions as well as move forward with our second edition of The DIY Festival, which was such a huge success in 2015.
As Artistic Director of The Stan Dup Ensemble, my ultimate goal is to create a program of new original works that can further develop and establish our artistic practice, whilst also reaching out further to the broader arts community, artists and our supporters. Our 2016 season will officially be announced on the 28th of January, but for now I wanted to share with all of you some of what I want to do with Stan Dup outside of our three productions and the festival.
Today, I wanted to share two principles of my practice that I will strive to instill in the culture of The Stan Dup Ensemble, and a couple of notes on what we plan to do over the next 12 months.
1 - We believe that a stronger community forges better and more ambitious artists.
There are sparks of individual brilliance amongst artists throughout Brisbane, however without exposure, opportunity and support, those sparks struggle to catch fire. We are not the only group that should be working to provide one (if not more) of those resources, and many organisations are doing amazing work at the moment in helping provide the much needed support to young and independent artists. We want to unite with other organisations and independent artists and continue forging a community. We want to spread the word about the work of independent artists and create networks between creative people. The mission started with our first DIY Festival and now will continue.
2 - We believe in transparency.
- We run a business.
- We create art and
- We help others create art.
Those three points can be very stigmatised when put together. We are a business, but we also want to be altruistic. It’s a fine line.
We want to open up our process and the running of our business. As such, we will be giving you the opportunity to Ask Us Anything, with our answers to those questions being published on the first Friday of every month starting in February 2016. You will be able to submit your questions through our website from January 28th, the date of our season launch.
I want 2016 to be a year in which we take SDE further than ever before, and I can’t wait for you to see our new season of shows, set in exciting new venues!
