Why should I be a part of The DIY Festival?
This is a question that has been posed to me many times and the answer has always been the same. You should be a part of The DIY Festival because it is an opportunity to create, without boundaries and restrictions, to experiment and to inspire not only yourself but your colleagues and audiences to want to create new, exciting works.
I know a lot of talented artists who have had trouble trying to find opportunities to make work that is outside of their immediate comfort zone. So many events that I have seen or participated in are highly competitive festivals where one bad review can spell the death of the drawing potential of a show. I'm not against competition in the arts, but my belief is that there should be more events that allow artists to work together to achieve collective success.
I don't know about you, but I think collective success is much more gratifying than individual success at the expense of others. The independent arts industry is fragile enough as it is and artists need to be encouraged to take risks to find the newest styles of performance and innovative presentation of content to forge a future for this industry and more importantly, our passions.
The DIY Festival provides just that, it is a stepping stone in the creative process. Exhibit your work for a public audience, get feedback from people who want you to succeed and take your work/s further so they can be celebrated for the standard of work that they are.
The DIY Festival is a unique opportunity in the Brisbane arts sector, a chance to forge a career. Every successful career in the arts has to start somewhere, and The DIY Festival is just the right place to start. Get you and/or your creative team together and apply for The DIY Festival. You won't regret it.
