Should you create an ensemble to apply for the DIY Festival?
Short answer: No. But also maybe.
To apply for the DIY Festival, you may apply as an ensemble or you may apply as a team. Ensembles do seem more professional, having their own Facebook pages/websites and sometimes even defined aesthetics. A team however is just a group built up of those people. For this Festival though, that’s not a bad thing, not at all!
If you are an emerging artist, than chances are you want people to get to know your name. You want people to remember who you are so that you can open up doors for yourself in the future. That’s what this festival is about, getting yourself out there on a professional stage, so make sure you do it right!
When Anywhere Theatre Festival first began, a friend of mine, Nathan Sibthrope wrote this:
Ask yourself if you REALLY want your name to be hidden behind the name of an ensemble. It all depends how you want to begin your career, and who you will be working with to create your show.
If you have 3 or more people that you know you’ll be working with over and over again for the next year, than maybe it is a great idea to begin your journey together as The 3 Amigos ensemble. Whatever your choice is, just make sure that you are getting what you want out of this, and you’re not just creating a company because there is an option to do so.
