When James and I took on the role of directors for This Is How I Met You, we had no idea what we were walking into or what to expect. The show itself had gone through two previous developments before we came on board, so it already had a breath of life inside it. Whenever we sat down to discuss our visions for its future we were always overwhelmed with this innate sense of excitement and bewilderment. We wanted this development...our development to truly be ours and explore the world of the show in our own way.
We held auditions to find our cast, brought on our producer and stage manager, gave ourselves a sneaky self-five and were ready to set sail down the river of exploration and creation. The destination; our show!
This Is How I Met You is all about first meetings, heart breaks, feelings of love and those little encounters with people that influence and shape us into who we are. We approached the rehearsal process with a complete open mind expecting the show to almost form itself with minimal guidance.
This worked for the first few rehearsals, we were fresh and just beginning to look at the concepts before us, but after a time we realised being so laissez-faire wasn’t giving us enough momentum to travel forward with our exploration. With our minds still open to all sorts of possibilities started to provide more thought out rehearsal plans, with goals to reach.
James and I have such a wonderful cast and crew who always jump on board with our crazy rehearsal ideas and pull together truly beautiful visions and fragments of performance. They take the weird directions and limitations we give them, for instance “you must be touching each other at all times throughout the scene”, and work with it. We challenge them and they challenge us back...it really is nothing like I expected.
Something that directing this show has taught me is to never have preconceived expectations of how something should be, because that will only limit the outcome and pause the creative flow. I am infinitely excited to watch our baby grow into a fully fledged show, so back to the rehearsal room I will go and see you all in the future with This Is How I Met You!
